" Built about 500m from the castle for the artisans by Smith (William Kellie Smith) when a
mysterious illness decimated the workforce and the remaining workers believed that the
gods needed to be appeased. To show the gratitude to Smith, the workers placed a figure
of him, complete with white suit and pith helmet, among the Hindu deities on the temple
roof. The temple is now semi-derelict but still in use. The resident priest will point out the
statue of Smith. "

" Kellie's Castle is a grand mansion with a six storey tower, 14 rooms, wine cellar and
stately columns. Moorish arches and walls embellished with Greco-Roman designs. There
was to be a rooftop courtyard for parties and even an elevator, 'a bucket lift' the first of
its kind in the country. Seventy tough workers, mostly from Madras, were employed. The
bricks were made here and marble were imported from India. "
