6. Sultan Abu Bakar Building (District Officers)
" The colonial building of the Muar Government Office which is situated at the
bank of the Muar river is the center of administration, development, legislation
and safety of the rural community. Although the building has stood for 76 years, it
still retains its architectural beauty while upholding its function as the
Government office of the Muar district.

The first Muar district office was built in 1884. This building was built of timber
under the supervision of Dato' Bentara Luar, Dato' Mohd Salleh bin Perang. This
timber building lasted for 31 years until the year 1915. The British advisor then
decide to replace the building with a new one and turn it into the Muar District
office.

During the second World War, the Japanese army gained control of the building.
Although its function was retained, the administrative system was characterised by
the Japanese administration. After the war ended the building and the
administration of Muar district was taken over by the British and the Johor State
Government. Since the independence of Malaysia, this office building is owned
and administered by the Johor State Government.

The architect responsible for the design of the building plan could not be
identified. Nevertheless, the construction of the building was carried out by the
Public Works Department during the British rule.

The building took six years to be completed beginning in 1915 until 1921. The
construction took a long turn due to the intrusion of the First World War which
began in 1915 until 1918.

The design concept of the building is a combination of Neo-classical and Georgian
architecture. The Neo-classical design can be seen from the overall building form
and the use of 'sail spread' at the main entrance door to this building. The design
was very popular in the nineteenth century in Europe, America and countries
under the British colonial rule which include Asia and Africa. The Georgian design
on the front elevation of the building clearly shows the eclectic influence of Asia
and Europe.

The Neo-classical design is clearly projected in the use of 'sail spread' of classical
shape and the design plan which is symmetrical. While the Georgian features are
clearly projected on the semi-circular arcades on the first floor and the
semi-circular design above the windows. The use of corridors supported by rows
of Tuscan columns on the second floor reflects additional classical influence in
this architecture."

" The two-storey courthouse (Bangunan Mahkamah) was built in the 1920s as an
administrative centre. The veranda on the top floor is decorated with various
objects made from mortar. The building is still in good condition, and tiles on
the roof have been replaced with newer one or of more  recent design"

" The Sultan Ibrahim Mosque was built in 1927. It stands near the mouth of the Muar River on a spot that is
attractive and conducive for praying. Although it is a mosque, the design has British influences. An
eye-catching and unusual four-storey tower is located at the back of the mosque. The roof of the main
building still has its original clay tiles. However, they are blocked from sight from below because of a high
brick wall. The wall is attractively decorated.

The Tengku Mahkota, or the heir to the throne of Johor, officiated the opening of the mosque in February
1930, when it was given its present name. The word 'Jamek' implies that the mosque is used for Friday
prayers."

" The design concept of this mosque is a combination of European classical architecture and Islamic
architecture. Like other mosques, this mosque has domed rostrum platform of Renaissance architectural
feature and Palladian Venetian windows surrounding the dome walls. Local architectural features at every
corner. The uniqueness of the architecture of this mosque can be seen in its minaret which depicts a
combination of western and Islamic architectural influence, the use of Roman Classical columns of Ionic type
and the use of balustrade on the balcony of its minaret."
